Hello..I have just begun looking into the history of my great grandfather, John Lynville Puckett, who apparently served in the 40th Regiment, Company II, of the Indiana Voluntary Infantry. My first question is…would that be the same as company B?…(don’t know much about these things). I did not see his name on the list. Here is what I do have so far by searching on Google…’John enlisted in Company II, Fortieth Regiment Indiana Volunteer Infantry, at La Fayette, Ind., as a drummer boy, and later as a regular soldier. He participated in the battles of Shiloh and Perryville, and with the Army of the Cumberland; he was in the battles of Stone River, Mission Ridge, Chattanooga, and at Kenesaw Mountain he was wounded by a gunshot. In 1865, he again joined his regiment at Huntsville, Ala. when they went into Texas, where they remained until December, and in January, 1866, he was honorably discharged at Indianapolis, Ind.’
Any info that you may have on my greatgrandfather would be so appreciated..
Thanks so much..
John Puckett

I have finally pieced together and confirmed my ancestor, John M. Baly, who served in Company B 40th Indiana Infantry. Thank you for your dedication and information you have provided on this site. Without it I would have never found him.
It is sad that he served only two months before his death in Jeffersonville, Indiana. Do you have any further information on this unit at the time of his death January 7, 1865?
Again, Thank You…

John M. Baly; resident of Kokomo, Ind. was drafted Nov. 2, 1864. Died at Indiana State Military Hospital, Jan. 7, 1865.
The 40th Ind. was on duty at Huntsville, Alabama at the time, following their pursuit of Hood’s Army of Tennessee after the defeat of Hood at the battles of Franklin (11/30/64) and Nashville (12/15-16/64).

I believe that John M. Baly (John M. Beaty) was my great, great grandfather. Where can I find original documentation on his service. He was married to Sarah J. Purvis Beatty of Sharpsville, Indiana and buried as grave #857 at New Albany Indiana cemetery.

I noticed that nothing is said about John Wooley except: Wooley, John – Chili – Killed, no date………….
Correction: John W. Wolley was born 1842, enlisted 11 Sep 1861,
Co. B, 40th Regt., Promoted to Corporal on Feb. 1, 1864, Killed in battle at Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia on June 27, 1864.

Thank you Stewart, your addition has been made. The Indiana rolls had no date attached to Mr. Wolley.

Thank you for this page. I wish I had a photo of my gg grandfather John Groat but so far I have not been able to find anyone in the family who has one. This page has helped a lot — thank you so much for all the work you’ve put in to it. I do know where he’s buried so that’s a plus.

For Captain Daniel A. Ewing, the Company B ledger does list him as such, but his first name was recorded incorrectly as Daniel rather than as David as was done on other documents and material relating to him. He was commissioned in 1861 in Mexico, Miami County, Indiana into Company B, 40th Regiment, Indiana Infantry and resigned in 1862.
Other records suggest that he likely rejoined the war effort in 1865 by enlisting as a Private in Company C, 151st Regiment, Indiana Infantry from Peru, Miami County, Indiana. This has yet to be confirmed, but is very likely based on the matching name, age and the location of enlistment.
After the war, he moved his family to Kansas. When he died he was buried in Riverview Cemetery of Scandia, Republic County, Kansas. His marker is inscribed with Capt. D. A. Ewing, Co. B, 40th Indiana.
