  1. Jane Silva McMaster Says:

Civil war veteran Sergeant Horace McMaster listed (40th Indiana Infantry, Company I ) above was my great grandfather. His discharge papers indicate that he was discharged from Indianapolis on 12/19/1864 because his term of service had expired. He enlisted 11/1/1862 for a term of three years. He was shot in the left elbow during his service.

If you have a way to update this information I would appreciate it.
Thank you for your service to the memory of these fine men.

  2. Jane Silva McMaster Says:

I got the date wrong for Horace McMaster. He enlisted 11/1/1861 rather than 11/2/62. Sorry.

  3. Cpl. Daniel Lambe Manwaring was killed at Kennesaw Mountain on June 18, 1864. Can you please suggest to me, how I might find out where he’s buried? Thank you.

  4. Craig G. Pete Says:

Sergeant Thomas jefferson Salisbury, was my Great Grandfather. He was enlisted into this Company for three years by Captain James Blake at West Lebanon on the 11th of December 1861 and mustered into the 40th Regiment at Sample Barracks, Lafayette, Indiana on December 21rst. He was 22 years of age, stood six feet, one and a quarter inches in height with a dark complextion, brown eyes, and black hair. He was an engineer by trade. He was one of four men lost from the regiment at Shiloh. He came down with Incipient Pthisis Pulmonalis on the 20th of April and was left at the hospital at Pittsburg Landing. He returned to the regiment on the 12th of July, 1862 but was still unable to perform a day’s march.
He was then sent to the hospital at Nashville to await discharge and received same, September 3rd, 1862 by order of General Buell.

    • Craig G. Pete Says:

Sergeant Thomas Salisbury’s nick-name was “Tommy light foot,” information per his daughter, Helen Beatrice Salisbury Baldwin.

  5. Craig G. Pete Says:

I see that I should have read more of your blog before I made my small addition. A clarification is in order.

I had a listing of four casualties at Shiloh in my records, and have always thought that they were all from the Fortieth. Now I see that the reference apparently applied to the entire Brigade. According to Colonel Wagner’s After Action Report, which you have so graciously posted, these four casualties were all from the Fifty Seventh Indiana.

Also, I have two separate dates for Sgt Salisbury’s discharge recorded in the Company’s Muster Rolls. For July-August 1863 he was listed as having been discharged on September 20, 1863 by order of “Genl. Bewel.” (sic) but on the Company Muster Out Roll, dated at Huntsville, Alabama on January 19, 1865, he was listed as discharged on September 3, 1862 even though the Company Rolls record him as being in hospital at Nashville until August of 1863. His actual discharge certificate has him discharged on September 13, 1862. Shows the immensity of attempting to keep track of even one single regiment in Mr Lincoln’s Army as the men came and went, and as the regiment moved to and fro.

    • Thomas J Salisbury Says:

I have been working on Thomas J Salisbury’s genealogy for a friend. I think this is the same Thomas. Could you please e-maile me. I have some information I can share with you.
