please consider adding Palestine Troup, of Paris, Edgar, Illinois. (Underage, b. 1848) who traveled with 40th Indiana and was wounded at Peachtree Creek according to Pension Application. Per Act of Congress, his term of service was set in S3090 of the 68th Congress as beginning 12 April 1864 until his discharge on 20 July 1864.

Pension Application lists a Disability due to wound from fragment of an artillery shell, resulting in a furrow in the skull and certified in a doctor’s examination dated 1882.

Good luck in you search. If it is still an active cemetery you might try to find the person with the cemetery plot map. I have found several missing people using them.

  5. Kylee Bannon Says:

I found Thomas D Henderson’s grave today nearby my home in Ekin. Though listed here as a deserter in 1865, his stone is full military and lists him as a First Sergeant. I’m curious as to why he deserted at an E-8 paygrade. I’m in the Indiana Guard and love finding and learning about military graves. Any information I can be pointed to would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Kylee. We will never know what motivated Henderson to desert. It is noted on his record “Dishonorably Discharged December 21, 1865. received 30 Day furlough and never Returned.” I have found many men that served through the war and later deserted. One obvious reason, the battles were over for the regiment after December 1864. They became an army of occupation in the south. Some men wondered why they were still serving after the south surrendered. Camp life became a dull routine and some felt that they had already done their part in defeating the Confederate army. Officers only had to resign their commission, not so for the enlisted men. He had a 30 day furlough and just didn’t come back. I am by no means saying Henderson was right in deserting, but after four years of fighting and the Confederacy defeated, he might have felt that the war is over and I’m going home.
